Standing Water in the Dishwasher Tub? Start With the Filter

A pool of water at the bottom after a cycle is usually a drainage restriction, not a failed pump.

Opening the dishwasher to find an inch of water sitting at the bottom, well after the cycle should have finished, is unsettling but rarely as serious as it looks. Drainage restrictions are common and usually accessible without tools.

Working through this in order — filter, hose, and only then considering the pump — saves time and avoids assuming the worst too early.

The filter is almost always the first suspect

Cancel the cycle if it is still running, let the tub settle, and remove the accessible filter assembly at the bottom of the tub following the manual's instructions. Rinse it thoroughly and check the housing beneath it for trapped debris.

A filter clogged with food particles, a broken piece of glass, or a stray label is one of the most common causes of standing water, and it is entirely a homeowner-accessible fix.

Symptom Likely cause Safe check
Water pooled after cycle Filter clogged with debris Remove and rinse the filter
Slow draining, gradually pools Kinked or blocked hose Inspect the visible drain hose
Drain-related error code Restriction or pump issue Record the code before resetting

What to check next, and what to leave alone

If the filter is clean and water still stands, a recently installed garbage disposal connection is worth checking — a knockout plug left in place on a new disposer is a common, easily fixed cause of a full drainage stop.

Beyond the visible hose and filter, the drain pump itself requires disassembly to access, and that is where homeowner troubleshooting should stop.

Safe to try

  • Clean the accessible filter thoroughly
  • Check the visible drain hose for kinks
  • Confirm a new disposer's knockout plug was removed

Leave to a technician

  • Reach into the pump housing
  • Disconnect internal wiring or hoses
  • Run repeated cycles hoping it clears itself

A clogged filter or a simple hose kink explains the majority of drainage complaints, and both are safe for a homeowner to check. If water still stands after ruling those out, a technician can access the pump and internal drain path safely.
